Contract campaigns across California are heating up! Educators are demanding thatdistricts prioritize spending on our classrooms and provide more support forstudents. Many local unions that are part of our We Can’t Wait campaign are nowat impasse in their negotiations with their Districts. Some of the thosestories are below:
United Educators of San Francisco declared impasse on October 6th. The following week, UESF delivered over 4,000 strike-ready signatures to SFUSD. UESF educators are ready to do whatever it takes to ensure students receive the schools they deserve. On November 12th, over 100 schools participated in strike-ready practice pickets; see photo's from the action here.
Madera Unified Teachers Association declared impasse on October 13th. Madera Unified refuses to prioritize funding classroom staff, and instead has increased the amount spent on consultants and subcontractors. MUTA members will continue to fight for the resources students and educators deserve.
Twin Rivers United Educators declared impasse on October 27th. This followed months of stalled negotiations where the district refused to present fair and meaningful proposals for TRUE members. TRUE is committed to fighting for smaller class sizes, recruiting and retaining high-quality educators, and fully-paid health benefits because investing in staff IS investing in students! Mediation starts on November 17th.
Natomas Teachers Association declared impasse on October 29th. NTA is fighting to reach agreements that will ensure safe and stable schools for Natomas students, and competitive wages and benefits that will recruit and retain educators in the district. On November 19th, NTA will hold a rally and march to the Natomas Unified School District's Board Meeting to demand NUSD prioritize the resources our students need to thrive. RSVP here.
Oakland Education Associationdeclared impasse on November 7th. This follows months of frustration with the district’s behavior at the negotiating table. OUSD needs to do a better job of prioritizing their spending to strengthen special education, improve school safety, and create more stability for students and educators! Mediation will be scheduled soon. School site pickets are taking place on November 13!
Standing with United Teachers of Richmond!
UTR is getting ready for the next steps in their fight for fully staffed and stable schools! A neutral panelist has been assigned, and a hearing has been scheduled for November 18th. This step marks the final stage of the statutory impasse procedures, meaning this is the last step before UTR is legally authorized to strike if the District continues to refuse a fair agreement.
In preparing to be strike-ready, UTR held a successful strike vote, picket captain training, and organized an amazing art build where educators, students, families, and local artists came together in Richmond to transform their righteous demands into bold, beautiful art.
